In a landmark UN resolution agreed upon today at the 29th Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), the international body urged states to take measures such as '[m]onitoring private education providers and holding accountable those whose practices have a negative impact on the enjoyment of the right to education by, inter alia, engaging with existing national human rights mechanisms, parliamentarians and civil society.' This unprecedented statement represents the first time that the HRC has formally recognised and responded to the rapid international growth in private actors in education. The statement was welcomed by eight Civil Society Organisations, including PERI, as a first step in strengthening governance and accountability with regards to privatisation and the right to education.
