PhD fellowship in Sociology (Education Policy and International Development) (2012-2016)

Position: The Globalization, Education and Social Policies research group (GEPS), based in the Sociology Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, offers a Doctoral Fellowship to investigate the international dissemination, implementation and impact of quasi-market policies in education.

Responsibilities: The fellow will be part of a larger research project entitled Public-Private Partnerships in Educational Governance: An analysis of its dissemination, implementation and impact in a globalizing world [EDUPARTNER] coordinated by Dr. Antoni Verger and financed by the European Research Agency through a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant (GA-2012-322350).

The fellow will be employed for 42 months, starting the 1st of January 2013 at the latest, and by the end of this period she/he will have to submit a PhD dissertation under the Sociology Department Doctoral Programme. The annual stipend, as established by the UAB EPIF pre-doctoral agreement, will be 14.391€ in the first annuity. There will be an additional budget for fieldwork.

The research will involve between 6 and 12 non-consecutive months of fieldwork in Southern countries working across a range of governance scales, from national to local policy levels. The fellow will use research methods from the social sciences for data collection, such as interviews, focus groups and questionnaires, and will work towards understanding the adoption, constitution and effects of educational quasimarkets in a sample of locations.

Qualifications: Applicants must be in possession of an undergraduate degree in Sociology, Political Sciences, Education or Economics, and a Masters degree in a related field. They should 1) write and speak fluently in English; 2) demonstrate experience in fieldwork-based research, consultancy or development work; 3) demonstrate that they have a strong training background in qualitative and quantitative methods; and 4) preferably credit some ability of independent thinking and writing through, for example, reports and peer-reviewed publications. Applicants with professional or research experience in the educational field and fluent Spanish will be given preference.
